At Dermaplicity, we are often asked to explain the difference between the use of Laser and IPL for laser hair removal. The two technologies are often misrepresented and for an establishment to advertise ‘Laser Hair removal’ when all they offer is IPL is very misleading for the potential client.
Although Dermaplicity offer both advanced IPL and Laser, we only use Laser for hair removal (Alexandrite and Nd:Yag) as it is still considered the gold standard for hair removal and offers the best, fastest and most effective results.
Laser produces a very concentrated beam of light with precise and focused energy offering more powerful (755-1064nm) and accurate results. Lasers use the exact wavelength needed to effectively treat the hair follicles, ensuring the best possible results on both dark and fair skin.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is not a laser, but a broadband light source with hundreds of wavelengths in each pulse giving a more diffused and less powerful (650nm) result. IPL is more suited to fairer skin types but produces more heat on the skin, discomfort and has a slower effect on reducing the growth of the hair.
Laser pulses are short, and target multiple hairs with each pulse, that, combined with the latest cryo cooling technology, achieves a more comfortable, virtually painless, result without the use of messy cold gel, often necessary with IPL. The main advantage of an IPL is its ability to treat multiple skin issues i.e. pigmented lesions, vascular and dispersed facial redness.
Medical treatment clinics will often have both Laser and IPL, as an IPL on its own is insufficient for the given task despite some assurances that one device ‘treats all’.
For an experienced and trained medical practitioner; a combination of technologies is often necessary to achieve a favourable outcome. Always ask your practitioner about their qualifications and experience and never be afraid to ask lots of questions about the laser treatment. Be concerned if the practitioner is not happy to answer all your questions fully or hurries you to start treatment with a ‘special’ deal.
