At Dermaplicity, we are often asked to explain the difference between the use of laser and IPL for hair removal. Although we offer both advanced IPL and laser, we only use laser (Alexandrite and Nd:Yag) because it offers the best, fastest and most effective results for our clients.
Laser produces a very concentrated beam of light with precise and focused energy offering more powerful (755-1064nm) and accurate results. Lasers use the exact wavelength needed to effectively treat the hair follicles, ensuring the best possible results on both dark and fair skin.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is less effective. This is due to the hundreds of wavelengths in each pulse giving a more diffused and less powerful (650nm) result. IPL is more suited to fairer skin types but produces more heat on the skin and has a slower effect on reducing the growth of the hair.
Laser pulses are short, and target multiple hairs with each pulse, that, combined with the latest technology, achieves a more comfortable, virtually painless, result without the use of messy cold gel, often necessary with IPL.
A good analogy for laser versus IPL is that if you had a choice between a Ferrari and a Mini, both are lovely cars but one will get you to your destination more comfortably and efficiently than the other. Dermaplicity has the Ferrari of laser hair removal!
